The White Witch had rose to power and laid an enchantment upon the whole country, bringing snows and coldness throughout the land, though it was never Christmas. She called herself Queen and ruled harshly. However, the people of Narnia held on to hope, that Aslan, Narnia's Creator, would not abandon them. Their hope was also in an ancient prophecy that stated
when the two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve sit as kings and queens on the four thrones of the castle of Cair Paravel, the Queen's power would be broken forever.

Edmund and Lucy had made brief visits before to Narnia through the wardrobe, but Edmund's earlier visit worked its disastrous consequences for all four of them.
